Cortex Live Management Bios

Stan Gordon President
Steve Steele Vice President & Chief Information Officer

Stan Gordon, President
Stan Gordon is a co-founder of Cortex Medical Management Systems, Inc. and has served as president of the company since it was created in 1983. One of a very few people to graduate from college as an officially-degreed "debugger," (due to his Entomology degree) Stan has been immersed in health data, medical records and technology systems for his entire career.

Stan has keen passion for contributing to people's health and for creating long-term business relationships. Consequently, his work at Cortex has resulted in a company that is aware of, and highly responsive to, client needs, diversity in its employee base, as well as emerging technologies.

Stan oversees marketing, sales support and contracts for Cortex's anatomical pathology and billing software systems; Cortex systems have been installed in more than 100 pathology laboratories across the country and two overseas.

Prior to founding Cortex, Stan was the manager of Strategic Information Systems Planning at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound where he developed the strategic information systems plan and corporate dictionary. He drove the procurement and installation of a clinical laboratory system for 22 clinical laboratories and during his tenure was recognized as the "Outstanding Advocate for Operations" by the organization's chief executive.

Prior to Group Health, two start-up companies - both of which experienced explosive growth during his tenure - employed Stan. At HBO & Company (HBOC), he was the twenty-ninth employee in a staff that subsequently grew to thousands of employees. As one of the earliest employees of McAuto's Health Care Services Division, Stan was project manager for the Medical Records Statistical System (MRII), and a systems analyst for on-line radiology and pharmacy systems.

In addition to being a technology instructor at the college level in the Seattle area, Stan has also been a guest lecturer at numerous health care related trade shows and national conferences. He has also published a number of articles on computers in healthcare.

Stan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in entomology from the University of Kentucky. He loves healthcare and technology because they are both "ever-changing and growing." He is an avid world traveler and automobile driver who previously served as regional director of the Pacific Northwest Ferrari Club.

Steve Steele, Vice President & Chief Information Officer
Steve is one of two founders of Cortex Medical Management Systems, Inc. (Cortex), and has served as vice president and chief information officer since joining the organization in 1986. For over 25 years, from mentoring employees, to establishing strategic direction for Cortex's products and services, Steve's efforts in the organization have been focused on helping others - employees and customers - achieve success.

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve's early years were spent in Carson City, Nevada - where his father worked for the Bureau of Reclamation of the U.S. Government. When his father took an assignment in Afghanistan, it meant that Steve also moved. School via correspondence in Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan was not to his liking so he moved to Kodiakanal, in India's Madras State - where after two years Steve graduated from Kodiakanal International High School.

His three years of attendance at the University of Utah was interrupted by the Selective Service - the Viet Nam era draft - and most of Steve's service in the United States military took place on Okinawa, Japan. After the military, Steve attended American University in Washington, D.C.; the Bachelor of Science degree he earned in 1972 was one of the nation's earliest programs focused on the business and operational aspects of information technology.

Steve began his career at Washington Gas Light Company in the nation's capital, where he was the chief programmer on their 400,000 customer accounting system. Lured to the City of Seattle - he created large customer-focused information systems that efficiently handled billing and collections needs of the city's large utilities. Following three successful years with the City, Steve went to work for Group Health Cooperative as the Manager of Software Development in 1978. All of this experience and knowledge has come in handy at Cortex - and this is where he met Stan Gordon, the other founder of Cortex.

Open water sailing is in Steve's bones and he acknowledges that a sailor's greatest day is "the day he buys a sailboat" and second greatest day is "the day he sells the sailboat."

A resident of downtown Seattle, Steve walks to Cortex's offices daily - located in the heart of the world renowned Pike Place Market - and finds time to spend with his three grown children and his three grandchildren.
